You'll be surprised to come upon this rural gay outpost in this hetero-dominated region. The Guerneville area is popularly called the Russian River for the meandering stream that runs through it. This down-to-earth village full of Western storefronts proudly flies rainbow flags, and the area is home to several gay-specific LGBT lodgings, like the Russian River Resort and Highlands Resort, which are located within walking distance of the downtown. Beyond kayaking and swimming along the river's wide beaches, sampling wine from surrounding vineyards, or nude sunbathing near Wohler Bridge, Guerneville is a pleasant place to stroll around or grab a drink at the cruise bar Rainbow Cattle Company, where you'll find a mix of gay women and men enjoying pinball, pool, and music ranging from rock to country & western. The town is attracting more and more of a lesbian, leather, and bear presence, with huge weekend theme events to boot. San Francisco is about a three-hour drive away.
