Main Beach and Cowell Beach are located on either side of the Santa Cruz Municipal Pier, near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Often crowded with novice surfers, the long, gentle waves at Cowell Beach make it a great place to learn how to surf.

  • Lifeguards are on duty during spring break and daily in summer.
  • Popular with more than just surfers, seagoing kayakers love Cowell Beach. Venture Quest, located at Cowell, has rentals and runs kayak tours.
Cowell is THE beach for learning how to surf. For one thing, the waves tend to be long and gentle. And because everyone knows this is a great spot for beginners, the locals are a little softer 'round the edges, too, not like the hardcore surfers at Steamer Lane.
