Pismo Beach Pier provides good fishing opportunities and relief from the summer heat for those traveling from scorching San Joaquin Valley. Each year an estimated 1.5 million visitors flock to Pismo Beach, the most heavily fished and second most productive of the Central Coast piers.

BeachExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • At more than 1,300 feet long, Pismo Beach Pier is one of the area's most notable and popular attractions. Lots of people fish for snapper and lingcod, and you don't need a license to do so (off the pier a license is required). Bait, tackle, and rental gear are available right on the pier.
  • Surfers and kiteboarders congregate here for easy access to the water and good waves, though it can get crowded. Three full-service surf shops are nearby.
  • One of the pier's time-honored traditions is night fishing for shark. It's mostly locals who keep this long-standing practice alive, but visitors can join in, too.
