• Popular with both mountain bikers and hikers, the trail to the summit of Cerro Alto is a stiff climb that offers a big reward at the top a 360-degree view of the Morro Bay Estuary, Morro Rock, and a good chunk of San Luis Obispo County. The 5.8-mile round-trip has a 1,900-foot elevation gain with some memorably steep sections. Spring is the best time to hit the trail, when the wildflowers bloom.
• The trailhead is located at Cerro Alto Campground, which has 22 secluded sites tucked into an oak and sycamore forest. No reservations are needed; sites are first come, first served.
