• San Elijo Lagoon is one of the few remaining expanses of wetlands in San Diego County. Although bordered by housing developments and shopping centers, the nearly 1,000-acre lagoon is a haven for wildlife, especially seabirds. Seven miles of hiking trails travel through the reserve.
• A great place to start birding is on the Nature Center Trail, a one-mile loop on the lagoon's north side. An intelligent series of interpretive signs explain about the importance of saltwater and freshwater marshes and coastal sage scrub habitat, and the wildlife that inhabits these places.
