  • One of five palm oases located in Joshua Tree National Park, 49 Palms Oasis is a great place for seeking out wildlife (bighorn sheep and coyotes) and enjoying spring wildflowers, including a desert orchid that grows near the oasis's pools. From late March to May, trailside barrel cactus bloom in profusion. One thing you won't see on this trail are Joshua trees; the elevation here is too low.
  • Birders should plan to spend some time in the oasis, awaiting the appearance of the stunning Scott's oriole, or a variety of species of hummingbirds and finches.
