  • Kelso Dunes are the third highest sand dunes in America, with dunes that reach a height of 600 feet. The entire dune complex covers 45 square miles. The dunes are closed to 4x4 use to protect their delicate plant and animal life, but open to hikers. Tread carefully to avoid stepping on the more than 100 different dune plants.
  • From the Kelso Dunes Trailhead, you'll see the dunes directly in front of you. Follow the established trail until it peters out, then pick any route and head up the sandy dunes. Many visitors try running or tumbling down the dunes in order to create a miniature sand avalanche, which in turn can make a harmonic booming sound. Some desert lovers swear by the healing powers of these dune noises.
  • Kelso Dunes are gold in color due to the presence of light-colored quartz and feldspar. Colorful traces of rose quartz and black magnetite can be seen from up-close.
