  • Stop in the visitor center before you head out for information on trails. Some of the trails are shadier than others, and some would be too much for kids on a hot day.
  • To beat the heat, go early, and bring plenty of water. Remember, much of this preserve is in the open desert.
All this for one little critter? The 20,000-plus acre Coachella Valley Preserve, along the San Andreas Fault and just east of the San Bernadino mountains, is dedicated to the protection of the endangered Coachella Valley Fringe-Toed Lizard, but
