• Located at the end of Balboa Peninsula, the Wedge is one of those famous surf spots like Maverick's and the Banzai Pipeline, except it's not for boards. It's for surfing in its purest form, body surfing.
• The Wedge is a wave phenomenon occurring only sporadically, primarily in summer. It's created by the physical characteristics of the area. Waves create a reflected wave that bounces off the jetty and moves sideways behind the original one. The sideways wave meets the next wave and they form a "double-size mutant triangle," which is pushed up to massive heights by the rising ocean floor.
• The Wedge breaks very hard and in very shallow water, and even very skilled body surfers have been seriously injured here. This is not for novices, but if the Wedge occurs while you're there, it's something to see.
