- You can get to Balboa Pier from the Pacific Coast Highway (there's metered street parking nearby), or cut across Balboa Island and hop on the ferry (60 cents per person one way, $1.50 per car).
- The main attraction for many, especially families, is the pier with its famous Fun Zone (ferris wheel, cotton candy, etc.). Balboa has lots of stores where you can rent beach cruiser bikes, surfboards, and rollerblades to make exploring more fun. If it's summer and you're planning to swim, go north of the pier to avoid the summer swim classes.
- The beach has a small surf break that rarely offers real stand-up surfing but it's a great place for kids and novices to try out surfing for the first time. Beach facilities include restrooms, showers, BBQ grills, picnic tables, and there are lifeguards.
