Upper Newport Bay is an estuary, where fresh and saltwater meet and mix, creating a unique habitat for flora and fauna. Some 200 species of birds, as well as mammals, fish, and plants call this estuary home.
Kayaking, fishing, canoeing, hiking, and cycling are all popular here. The Reserve is home to six rare or endangered species of birds, and one endangered plant species.
Guided nature walks are usually offered the first and/or third Saturday of the month. Friends Tours take place the second Saturday of the month from October through March. Both are free. Call 949.923.2269 for information.
