• This is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, working since 1855. Alcatraz Island Lighthouse is slightly older, but was replaced in 1909. Point Pinos lighthouse is 89 feet above sea level and its light can be seen 15 miles out at sea.
• The lighthouse is open Thursday through Monday in the afternoons. Visitors are asked to give a small donation.
• Robert Louis Stevenson wrote about one of Point Pinos' lightkeepers, Allen Luce, whom he visited in 1879 after walking through the woods from Monterey.
