• The island of Murano is famous for its Venetian glass. You can watch glassblowers working their artful magic here, making Murano an excellent outing for families. Be aware that there will be sales pitches following demonstrations, but you can ignore them.
• Retail and restaurants aren't much to write home about but there are adventures to be had. Pick up a Monterey Rent-a-Roadster here and explore in an open-air auto modeled after Ford and Mercedes roadsters. Visit Adventures by Sea to rent kayaks, bikes, surfboards, and wet suits, or sign up for bike or kayak tours and surfing lessons.
• Have you read Cannery Row by John Steinbeck? Today's Row doesn't faintly resemble the powerful, gritty place Steinbeck wrote about, but the Steinbeck Spirit of Monterey Wax Museum on Cannery Row has 100 figures, interactive exhibits, and more depicting 450 years of Monterey history. As history lessons go, it's colorful and engaging--even if Steinbeck might be spinning in his grave.
