Monastery Beach is one of the most popular beach and diving sites in the Monterey area. The south side of the beach is a calm patch reef that offers a relaxing dive. The north side of the beach is more open to the swell and allows divers access to the extreme depths of the Monterey Submarine Canyon.

  • Monastery Beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach, is popular with scuba divers and it's an excellent dive site.
  • Divers can go into the water from shore, boat, or kayak. However you go, entering the water at the north or south ends is better than the middle, which is known for strong currents.
  • This is not a safe beach for swimming or for novice divers. Divers should be advanced to expert here.
