Carmel Beach offers good opportunities for surfing as well as great conditions for dog-walking. It hosts an annual sandcastle contest, and there are a variety of shops and restaurants nearby.

  • The town of Carmel-by-the-Sea owns the beach and operates it as a public park. No commercial activity is allowed here, in order to preserve the natural beauty of the beach and bluffs.
  • Divers can go into the water right from the beach. The kelp forests make it an especially nice dive site, with most areas in the 30- to 60-foot range.
  • If you're not a diver, check out the tidepools at the north end of the beach. There's parking near the Ocean Avenue entrance, but there are also entrances and stairway access all along the beach (though not necessarily a lot of parking by those access points).
