Sure, the drive-up view at Glacier Point is fantastic. But just a mile away lies the trailhead for Taft Point, an easy 2.2-mile round-trip hike that provides a head-on view of El Capitan (bring your binoculars so you can scan for daredevil rock climbers) and a stomach-churning view of the Yosemite Valley floor, 3,000 feet below. This is no place for acrophobes.
The trailhead for Taft Point also serves as the trailhead for Sentinel Dome, a gentle hike to the top of a 8,122-foot granite dome. The two trails lead in opposite directions, but you can loop them together for a spectacular 6.5-mile hike. Or, if you are short on time, go out-and-back on both trails for a total of 4.4 miles. Sentinel Dome is one of the best spots in the park for sunset-watching.
