Like most northern California beaches, this one isn't for swimming, as the water is typically a chilly 55 degrees. But it's ideal for families with adolescents because it's well protected, making it one of the only beaches for beginner surfers and kayakers. It's also convenient: The store right across the road at the RV park has kayaks and surfboards for rent—no need to fit them in your car to access a distant launch site (no wetsuit rentals, though, so bring your own or rent from Sub-Surface Progression in Fort Bragg). There's currently no fee to use Caspar Beach, but parking is limited.
