Schooner Gulch State Beach is a scenic spot along the Mendocino Coast where visitors can fish, picnic, surf, and enjoy a sunset view. Bowling Ball Beach trail leads over the headlands and down a display of man-made stairs to the beach that bears its name.

  • At the small parking area at State Highway 1 and Schooner Gulch Road, there are two trails. The southern trail leads to Schooner Gulch Beach, the northern trail to Bowling Ball Beach.
  • Bowling Ball, named for the smooth, spherical boulders on shore, is a fantastic photo op—many professionals have captured these oddly beautiful stones.
  • Prepare for unpredictable weather by wearing layers. Bring supplies, too—there are no real services on the beach.
Just south of Point Arena, Schooner Gulch is a California state beach. Windsurfing and diving are among the popular activities, but don't surf or dive alone and always check with rangers to get an experienced, local take on water conditions.
