The most famous sidewalk in Los Angeles —or anywhere in the United States, for that matter —is along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is just how it sounds: a sidewalk-style entertainment museum studded with more than 2,000 stars featuring the names of some of the town's most famous celebrities. Maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust, the multi-block museum runs west on Hollywood Boulevard from Gower Avenue to La Brea, and on Vine Street from Yucca to Sunset Boulevard, measuring about 3.5 miles. The attraction was born in 1958, when the first eight stars were dedicated on a patch of sidewalk on the northwest corner of Hollywood and Highland. Less than two years later, Joanne Woodward was the first actress to receive a star. A $4.2 million face-lift in 2008 helped the Walk of Fame remain one of the most visited and entertaining sites in L.A. It features celebrities of all sorts, from Michael Jackson (who has two stars, one for his solo work and one for his work with The Jackson 5), to famed director Alfred Hitchcock, to fictional figures like Mickey Mouse, to animal stars like Lassie and Rin Tin Tin.
