• Get a close look at the sky with the help of seasoned amateur astronomers. Hit the star party, held one Saturday afternoon and evening each month, and peer at planets, the moon's face, and other neighbors in the sky. You can even learn more about the telescopes you're using, in case you want to start up a family astronomy hobby once you get home.
• Planetarium shows run several times a day every day but Monday, when the observatory is closed. Shows go beyond pointing out the constellations—some have covered the search for water on other planets, others look at the origins of the universe. Buy tickets in advance, and arrive early—latecomers will miss the show.
• Have kids younger than five? Bring them to the first planetarium shows of the day. The later shows are limited to older kids and their families.

Planetarium shows run every 60 to 90 minutes, lighting up the dome with both a star projector and a laser projection system. If you get hungry, visit the Cafe at the End of the Universe. Be sure to stay for sunset—the view of the ocean, along with the surrounding Los Angeles Basin, is spectacular. And then, when the stars come out, you'll know a little bit more about what lies in the sky.
