• Descanso is away from Avalon's busy center, located just north of the landmark Avalon Casino (a historic building with a ballroom and theater—not a gambling establishment). It's popular with swimmers, sunbathers, snorkelers, and kayakers.
• This is the home base of Descanso Beach Ocean Sports and Catalina Island Kayak Expeditions. You can rent snorkel gear, touring and sit-on-top kayaks, short and long wetsuits, and sign up for kayak excursions.
• The beach is part of the Descanso Beach Club, but it's not private. When you're finished playing in the water, head to the open-air patio for drinks and music.
