At 14,496 feet elevation, Mount Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. The peak and the trails that approach it lie within the John Muir and Sequoia National Park Wilderness Areas. In contrast to areas where people and their own works dominate the landscape, wilderness areas are places where the earth and its communities of life are untrammeled by people, where people themselves are visitors who do not remain. These areas were set aside by Congress and the President to provide opportunities for solitude and unconfined, primitive types of recreation.
