An architectural ode to Oceania and a tribute to the arts and cultures of the Pacific, this center opened in 1998 and may be one of the most photo-worthy sites of Noumea. Renzo Piano's evocative design, re-creating the look of a traditional Kanak village, is mesmerizing. The center has historical timelines and nearly 800 works of art, as well as a ceremonial area where visitors can see a typical house of a native chief and Kanak sculptures. The center is named for Jean-Marie Tjibaou, who fought for New Caledonia's autonomy from France.
