Take a 40-minute boat ride from Noumea and you're on tiny Amedee Island, with its 19th-century lighthouse and what is reputed to be the world's smallest post office (bring a card to mail). There's a little of that Caribbean-cruise shore-excursion atmosphere—T-shirt shops and dancing—but the water, wow, the water. Only a little over 100 by 200 yards (think football fields), Amedee sits in a marine sanctuary and the snorkeling and diving are superb. There's nothing wrong with an afternoon of lounging on a pristine stretch of sand, either. Book a tour through your hotel; most include lunch.
