Rafters will depart at the edge of Kennicott River, the rock-covered terminus of Kennicott Glacier. Within minutes after launching, they will careen through Class III rapids. Rapids continue for 45 minutes before the river gives way to a gentle float. At the junction of the Kennicott and Nizina Rivers, rafters are carried west, traversing a wide glacial valley that enters the deep, rock-walled Nizina River Canyon. For one hour they will maneuver through a wondrous maze, stopping at narrow sand bars and hidden beaches. Participants meet the bush plane on a gravel bar at the junction of the Nizina and Chitina Rivers. Flying high over the Kennicott and Root glaciers, participants retrace the rafting route two at a time, getting a birds-eye view of the icy maze below. The plane passes historic Kennecott, then descends to its final destination at the McCarthy airstrip.
