This short trail leads three quarters of a mile to the fire lookout at the summit of Schonchin Butte. It is a well built trail with an easy grade and suitable for families with youngsters. The trail climbs 600 feet with benches along the route for the weary.
The fire lookout is staffed from June through September. The public is permitted on the perimeter deck, and inside if invited, to view the surrounding area. The view from this site will give visitors a better idea of the surrounding volcanic formations and how Lava Beds National Monument fits into the big volcanic picture. Maps located on the lookout deck will help you interpret the scenery. If you hike this trail during the spring months you may be treated to a wildflower display.
Directions: From Lava Beds Visitor Center, Travel northward 2.5 miles on the park road to the turnoff for Schonchin Butte. Turn right on the access road, which changes to dirt after a short distance. Follow the road 1.25 miles to the trailhead.
