The 95-acre Dallas Zoo opened in 1888 and has grown into Texas's largest zoological park. Visitors are welcomed by a nearly 70-foot-tall giraffe sculpture and can visit three main areas—the Wilds of Africa, Zoo North, and the Children's Zoo. The Wilds of Africa has a Gorilla Trail that features rare species like meerkats, okapis, hyraxes, and klipspringers. The saddle-billed stork area is home to the zoo's stork-breeding program, which was the first in the country to let storks incubate their own eggs and rear their young. The Jake L. Hamon Gorilla Conservation Research Center allows visitors to watch gorillas from observation platforms and ask guides questions about the animals. Zoo North features a variety of animal habitats, including the Otter Outpost, the Endangered Tiger Habitat, the Australian Outback (which includes kangaroos and wallabies), the Reptile Building, and Flamingo Pond. The Children's Zoo has a farm area with pygmy goats, miniature donkeys, and Dall sheep, while the Underzone is an area with animals that live well in the dark, such as mole rats and mongooses. The Giants of the Savanna exhibit is an 11-acre area where visitors take a safari among giraffes, elephants, lions, cheetahs, and other animals native to Africa. The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
