On the southwest part of Majorca, west of the capital of Palma, is this very popular beach resort area built in the 1960s at the site of a fishing harbor. A wide pedestrian and bicycle promenade lines Palma Nova's three beaches, which along with calm waters and clean sands makes it a very family-friendly destination. (The adjoining resort town of Magaluf, with its summer party-hearty pubs and bars, attracts a younger and wilder crowd.) Palma Nova is one of the busiest and most built-up of the island's beaches, with everything from fast-food joints to mini golf to glass-bottom-boat cruises to vacation apartments to ethnic restaurants. During the summertime, it can be a bit of a zoo, but during winter, when retired and elderly snowbirds come to roost, it can be a bit calmer.
