These mysterious caves are said to be the inspiration for the Jules Verne tale Journey to the Center of the Earth and can be visited on an easy half-hour to 45-minute tour given in Spanish, French, English, and German. Huge stalactites drip down from the rock ceilings and vaguely resemble human forms. Old stone stairways lead you down into the Hall of Columns, which has a Gothic interior, blackened by the torches used to light the caves for 19th-century tourists. The best scenery is in a lower vestibule called Hell, with different sections named after Dante's Inferno. The caves were once used by pirates and persecuted Spanish Moors, and the likes of Queen Isabella II, Sarah Bernhardt, Alexandre Dumas, and Victor Hugo have all been tourists.
