The most popular section is about half a mile in length, and it's a favorite tourist activity to tread along the coast—meaning the narrow trails can get packed in summer. Dotted with picnic areas and stone beaches embedded in the cliffside, there's no better way to spend a day soaking up the ocean views. At either end of the entire trail from Manarola with Riomaggiore, steps lead up from the train station to the path, so you could walk one way and take the trail home the other. The different sections vary in difficulty, from a leisurely stroll to a sweating hike, with the stretch from Manarola to Corniglia being the easiest to hike despite its hundreds of stairs. The trail from Vernazza to Monterosso is by far the steepest, but it is emptier and has some of the best scenery through olive orchards and vineyards. There are fees to use the more popular walking trails, but the less frequently traveled (and most arduous) are free of charge.
