After passing the Purgatory area, U.S. Highway 550 climbs steeply up Coal Bank Hill just east of Engineer Mountain. If you have time and a sturdy vehicle, the Old Lime Creek Road (Forest Road 591) is a scenic alternate route that rejoins U.S. Highway 550 after 12 miles.

Directions: From Durango, Colorado, Take U.S. Highway 550 30 miles north from Durango and go past the turn-off for Purgatory Ski Area Turn east onto Old Lime Creek Road (Forest Road 591). The road rejoins U.S. Highway 550 12 miles later.
