The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is Belize's oldest marine reserve. Located four miles southeast of San Pedro Town on the Belize Barrier Reef, the Reserve is divided into four zones: The Reef, The Seagrass Beds, The Mangrove and Shark Ray Alley, all of which are marked by buoys. The reef's shallow water makes it a popular spot for snorkelers and divers, who will see a wide variety of fish including sharks, stingrays, and moray eels.

  • You must hire a boat and guide; from San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), most tours are half-day. Also check out the visitor center in San Pedro for a good overview of Belize marine life
  • On the 15-minute boat ride to the reserve from San Pedro, watch for jumping rays and flying fish
  • Most tours include a stop at Shark Ray Alley, perfect for beginner divers and for snorkelers
