At the start, the trail ascends. At 0.5 mile, trail bears right with bar gate across it to eliminate vehicle travel. Trail continues to ascend on an old logging road. At 0.9 mile, wildlife water hole on left of road. At 1.4 miles, wildlife water hole on right of road. At 1.8 miles, trail forks off to left and intersects Appalachian Trail after 260 feet. Trail which continues on old logging road begins decent and becomes Buchanan Trail.

Directions: From Arcadia, VA, Traveling to Arcadia, take Exit 168 on I-81. Follow VA 614 until you reach Arcadia, Virginia. Turn right (SW) on VA 622 between Arcadia Church and Arcadia Store. Go 0.13 mile and turn left onto Cove Mountain Trail, which follows an old logging road.
