Most of the city's gay bars are located in the Oxford Street area in the district of Darlinghurst. The street is alive with activity almost all hours of the day, but really goes into overdrive on the evenings. Many of the bars and restaurants are designed to open right onto the street, with screens in place for when it's cold. The resulting affect is a festive, street party-esque scene, where bar/restaurant patrons and passersby interact in true Aussie friendly fashion. The close proximity makes bar hopping not only easy, but a must! You can spend a whole day just on Oxford Street, as you shop the trendy neighborhood boutiques, then grab a bite to eat at one of several restaurants like the Pink Peppercorn, and finally end your night meeting the local "Sydneysiders" at a neighborhood bar, and dancing at ARQ. Be sure to pick up a copy of the free Sydney Star Observer, Lesbians on the Loose (LOTL), SX, or one of the other gay scene rags for the low down on what's going on that week. (-) Close
