This trail is open to hiking. This is very open, dry country so be sure to bring plenty of water. The stretch of road that leads to the drop-off down to the creek is very rocky and rough. Only high clearance vehicles are recommended.
The climb, both down and up, is quite steep and the trail is difficult to find in some places. On the way down, you can follow the easiest route to the creek, then go south to where Swale Creek enters. At this junction, you must ford the creek and pick up the trail on the other side. A topographic map is helpful in finding the right trail on the east side of the creek. Pick up a fireman's map at the district office for help in locating the trail.
This is a great area for viewing creek valleys and cliffs. Both Skokum and Swale Creek drainages have beautiful rock formations. In the creek bottom are nice spots for camping and general viewing of the rocks and cliffs.
Directions: From Heppner, Take State Highway 207 south for about 26 miles to Anson Wright County Park. At the corner, turn right on County Road 670 and continue until it turns into FS Road 22. Turn left at FS Road 2119 and follow it for about 3 miles. Cross Road 21 and follow until it turns into FS Road 2120; go for approximately 5 miles to the 075 road. The trail begins here, but is in the form of a road. You can park here and walk the trail, or continue driving until you reach the end of the road and the trail drops off to Skokum Creek.
