Downtown Montreal's main channel, Saint Catherine Street crosses the business district, shopping square, and the borough of Ville-Marie, and runs parallel to the tunnels of Underground City. Boutiques, cafes, and decades-old department stores fill its nine-mile length, which morphs into a gigantic sidewalk sale every July. Branching eastward, the street drifts into the Gay Village, where the bistros, bars, and clubs host a famous nightlife.
