The Rideau Canal, a scenic waterway connecting Kingston and Ottawa enchants visitors with its tranquil beauty (Ken W. Watson)

If the heart of Canada is capital city Ottawa, then Rideau Canal is its vein, connecting dozens of clear lakes and rivers and rippling beside the parks, paths, museums, and communities that follow its 125-mile course. The nine reserves and conservation area that line the waterway offer a little bit of everything. Rideau Trail is a mix of hiking, boating, and sightseeing that winds all the way to Big Rideau Lake. In spring and summer, tourists explore the region on bike—rentals are available at shops and local hotels. But when the cold weather creeps in, most folks cozy up in a charming B&B, ski, or hop on a snowmobile and plow through the frozen lakes.
