Thompson Boling Arena, on the campus of the University of Tennessee, is the 25,000-seat home of the university's men's and women's basketball teams. It also frequently hosts concerts, conventions, and a range of sporting events. The arena opened in 1987 and has hosted two of the largest games in NCAA basketball history—a 1989 men's game against the Kentucky Wildcats played before a crowd of 25,610, and a 2006 women's game against the Connecticut Huskies before a crowd of 24,653. The arena has hosted the NCAA men's basketball tournament twice, in 1994 and 1999, and the 1990 Women's Final Four. Pat Summitt, one of the most decorated coaches in the history of women's basketball and a longtime coach for the Lady Volunteers, won her 1,000th game at the arena in February 2009; the basketball court here is named "The Summitt" in her honor. Basketball season spans November to March, and tickets are available from the arena box office.
