Parks and OutdoorsExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • A good zoo in a beautiful location. Great for kids, of course, but also for adults looking for a pleasant day outdoors.
  • If it's hot, take the tram from the zoo to the gardens to avoid a surprisingly steep uphill trek on the far side of the river, but be sure to walk back. A beautiful forest footpath leads down the bluff through dense woods, past the ruins of an old Confederate mill, joining back with the tram route at the footbridge across the scenic Congaree River.
  • The zoo is far from downtown Columbia, but it's very close to the Embassy Suites Columbia-Greystone. If you know Embassy Suites, you know what to expect—an atrium, indoor pool, great breakfast-buffet and decent-sized rooms. The hotel offers special Zoo Packages, so be sure to ask the desk about them when you make a reservation.
