  • The heart of the Columbia Museum of Art is its Kress Collection. The dime-store magnate offered any town with a Kress store gifts of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art. Columbia leapt at the offer, and benefited greatly: its Kress Collection is third in size only to the slightly larger one found at Raleigh's NC Museum of Art, and the one anchoring the National Art Gallery in Washington, DC.
  • Founded in 1950 in an old home, the museum reopened in 1998 in a renovated former Macy's Department Store in Columbia's ever-deteriorating downtown district. The current museum is several times larger than the old one and has produced a positive financial impact of more than $9 million dollars in the years since its opening.
  • The museum hosts numerous workshops and arts activities for children. Call ahead to see what the curators are offering while you're in town.
