San Antonio's Latin influence is most deeply felt at Market Square, said to be the largest Mexican-style market north of the Rio Grande, where papel picado—elegantly cut colored tissue—sways just above heads. Each morning, the scent of pan dulce (sweet bread) and Mexican-style hot chocolate spiked with cinnamon wafts from family owned cafés. The shopping includes lots of border-quality souvenirs, but pottery, embroidered clothing, jewelry, and Talavera dishes poke out from the fray, plus there's fine contemporary art at Galeria Ortiz. Several restaurants serve tasty Mexican fare accompanied by mariachi music, including Mi Terra Café, a 24-hour eatery.
