A must-stop in Providence is the labyrinthine RISD Museum, with its diverse multicultural collection, including Roman sculpture, Japanese watercolors, and Turkish textiles. Of particular interest are the costume and textiles exhibits consisting of over 15,000 objects, dating from antiquity to the present, with 11,000 flat textiles and 4,000 costumes and accessories that trace the world history of fabric and dress. Opened in late 2008, the museum’s adjoining steel-and-glass Chace Center has an exhibition by celebrated gay glass sculptor Dale Chihuly (a RISD alumnus). Afterwards, stroll to the nearby Woods-Gerry Gallery at 62 Prospect Street to peruse the top-notch jewelry and photography produced by current RISD students, all housed in a huge, old, brick mansion.
