Originally founded in 1981 and moved to its present hilltop location in 1989, this long-time bar favorite is a must-do for any gay visitor to Denver. Home to the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association, Charlie's is at first glance a country/western bar, but actually attracts a wide range of people from twinks to bears and everyone in between (even straights). The same goes for its sister bar Club Charlie's, which is more of a dance space with techno music. The wood-paneled, down-and-dirty main cowboy bar hosts line dancing, karaoke, pool, darts, beer busts, drag numbers, and wet jockey shorts contest on its patio. The whole place is devoid of any sniff of attitude, and is as friendly as the wide-open Coloradoan skies.
