Get off the tourist track: Fans of contemporary art should splurge for a cab from Miami Beach over the causeway into the Design District/Wynwood Arts District, where hip new restaurants are popping up regularly among furniture showrooms and art galleries. The 'hood's piece de resistance is the Rubell Family's private collection, housed in a 45,000-square foot former DEA confiscated-goods warehouse. (Collector Don Rubell is the brother of late Studio 54 co-founder Steve Rubell.) Shows change annually but are always edgy. LGBT works are well represented in the collection, from the paintings of Keith Haring and rising gay star Hernan Bas to Charles Ray's homoerotic sculpture "Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley?" Just time it right, as the collection closes down for six months a year to rotate the pieces. New exhibitions debut in time for the powerhouse international festival Art Basel Miami Beach in early December and run through May.
