Named the No. 1 zoo in the United States by Parents magazine in 2009, Lowry Park Zoo showcases 2,000 animals on nearly 60 acres of natural habitats, water play areas, rides, and educational shows. Current habitat areas include Safari Africa and Ituri Forest, filled with elephants, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, antelope, cranes, cheetahs, and pygmy hippos; Wallaroo Station, an interactive area designed especially for families that showcases several animals native to Australia; and Florida Boardwalk, which is filled with animals native to Florida. Children will enjoy several rides, including the Overland Express locomotive, the Gator Falls Flume Ride, and the Tasmanian Tiger Family Coaster. More adventurous souls can even ride a camel. The River Odyssey Ecotour cruises the Hillsborough River in search of river turtles, hawks, herons, manatees, and dozens of other animals. The Florida Manatee and Aquatic Center, home to the David A. Straz Jr. Manatee Hospital, cares for injured, sick, and orphaned wild manatees.
