The Florida Aquarium has been rated one of the best aquariums for kids in the U.S. ((courtesy, Tampa Convention and Visitors Bureau))

Ranked as a "Top-5 Kid-Friendly Aquarium" by Parents magazine, the Florida Aquarium is home to more than 20,000 aquatic plants and marine animals from around the world, including river otters, alligators, stingrays, and sharks. There are several exhibits, including the "no borders, no barriers" Penguin Promenade, which offers an up-close look at the adorable African black-footed penguin. Ocean Commotion, an engaging exploration of underwater life, is the most high-tech gallery found in any aquarium in the country. The Wetlands exhibit showcases ecosystems unique to Florida, while Bays and Beaches features such exotic sea creatures as the sea horse, black drum fish, and tripletail. Families can continue their journey at Explore A Shore, an outdoor water park designed specifically for small children. Those 12 and older can participate in a two-hour shark feeding every Tuesday and Sunday. The cost is $50 and includes an "I Fed the Sharks!" apron. The Swim with the Fishes program offers visitors six and older the chance to strap on a small scuba tank and swim with nearly 2,300 fish.
