Uber-modern it's not, but friendly Tavern on Camac is a reliable watering hole for queers of all ages taking a spin through the midtown gayborhood, especially since the crown worn by long-reigning dance champ Woody's isn't quite as lustrous. The three-level nightspot draws a more mature crowd to its piano bar, while the upstairs disco, pulsing with vocal-driven tracks from the 1980s on, brings in a younger fan base. The Underground, its warm-wood-cloaked basement restaurant, serves classic American dishes; there's a nice sprinkling of seafood among the appetizers, but entrees have a definite carnivorous slant. Even though it's one of the oldest gay bars in Philly, it's experiencing a sort of renaissance.
