About 2,500 people a month pass through the doors of this LGBT community center in the heart of Philly's midtown gayborhood, drawn to its art gallery, with shows that rotate bimonthly, a 10,000-book gay library, a cyber center with free WiFi access, and an extensive social/support group schedule. But what really makes this center worth a look for tourists is the Pride and Progress Mural, a 7,500-square-foot, four-story ode to the gay community that covers its west exterior wall located at Juniper at Spruce Street. The city-commissioned painting—one of more than 2,700 produced in Philadelphia through its Mural Arts Program—depicts 1960s gay rights marches held near Independence Hall, prominent gay activists, and a pride festival. It's a fitting tribute to the pre-Stonewall leaders who fought for our visibility.
