The Franklin Institute is one of the country's leading science museums. Opened on January 1, 1934, it was one of the first hands-on science museums in the United States. It was founded in honor of America's first scientist, Benjamin Franklin, and has a number of acclaimed permanent exhibitions. A giant walk-through model of the human heart has been an icon since it appeared in 1954 and is now part of an updated bioscience exhibit, The Giant Heart: A Healthy Interactive Experience. The Amazing Machine exhibit allows visitors to walk through a machine-like room highlighted by three remarkable kinetic mechanical art installations by sculptor and architect Ben Trautman, little-seen pieces from the institute's renowned science collection, and an intriguing series of interactive displays. Sir Isaac's Loft, on the third floor, combines art and science in an innovative 3,600-square-foot display. New exhibits, exciting Omnimax films, and interactive presentations continue the institute's long tradition of making science and technology fun.
