• Muir Beach's picturesque, semicircular cove is a fine place to spend a day at the beach. If you feel like getting some exercise take Green Gulch Trail from the beach northeast to Green Gulch Farm, a center for organic gardening and meditation. Continue then uphill past the farm and into the hills of the Marin Headlands. You can loop back on Middle Green Gulch Trail.
• The Coastal Trail runs along the bluffs from Muir Beach to Rodeo Beach. From the beach the trail heads inland around Point Bonita and meanders until it winds up at the Golden Gate Bridge. If you can arrange a car shuttle, this is a spectacular, 11-mile one-way trip.

• Lucky residents of Marin County have this great boogie boarding and kayaking beach at their doorstep. It's a popular getaway for city residents, too.
• As you walk from the parking area (often full early in the day), stop at the lagoon, where a multitude of shorebirds, fish, and amphibians can be seen.
• Visit Muir Beach Overlook (unless you're afraid of heights) for one-of-a-kind views of the ocean. You might even spot migrating whales in season. Picnic near the overlook—it's windy (as is the beach), but there are tables and grills at the south end of the parking lot.

• A popular spot for boogie boarding, sea kayaking and fishing, not to mention a great place to relax and take in the beautiful scenery.
• Try the nearby Pelican Inn, with guest rooms upstairs and a great pub downstairs.
• Horses and dogs are allowed on this stretch of beach, but be sure to check in with the rangers for any updates on regulations.
